Here’s how they work:
A cordless telephone is considered a combination of a telephone, and a radio transmitter and receiver.
When a call is made, the handset receives a radio signal from the base, and converts it into an electrical signal. This is what you hear.
When you talk into the phone, the handset broadcasts your voice through a radio signal back to the base. The base receives the signal, converts it to an electrical signal, and sends that to the person you’re on the phone with.
The technology behind this is known as DECT - or Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications.

It sounds really complex.
But you don’t have to worry about the acronyms, or the technology.

The range of features on offer was the most popular mention regarding this phone. And with up to 5 handsets, it suited growing businesses and offices. The HD sound was also raved about, confirming this as perfect for busy offices.
The limited storage brought down this phone, so you better answer the calls! The poor quality of the make and flimsy design was also considered a problem. This phone is for busy office use only!
What is VoIP?
VoIP - or Voice Over Internet Protocol - is technology that can convert your voice into a digital signal so it can then be passed over an internet connection.
It allows you to make a call from your computer, device, or - of course - a VoIP phone.
In more technical terms, it sends voice data as packets using IP rather than the traditional method of traditional circuit transmissions of the PSTN.
Do cordless phones work with VoIP?
Simply plug your cordless phone into the USB port of your computer once you’ve installed VoIP on your computer.
The calls will be routed through your computer’s internet connection using your VoIP provider.
What is a DECT phone?
DECT - or Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology - allows your phone to link to its base wirelessly.
By converting your voice into radio signal and transmitting it to the base, a phone call can be made without a cord.
